The
Lac La Croix Indian Pony used to frequent both Canada & The
United States.
The breed was diminished to FOUR in Canada (none found in the US).
In the early 1990's, Rare Breeds Conservancy which is now Rare
Breeds Canada got involved
and started a new breeding program, to help bring back a pony of
our heritage. Today it's numbers are above 96 animals. 19 of these
incredible ponies are owned by Rare Breeds Canada. 8 of which are
now in Alberta - 4 of which are here at McLeod Creek Farm. We are
very excited to be a part of this incredible program as a host
farm for this rare breed of Canada.
Jane
Mullen, who is the Breed Coordinator for Rare Breeds Canada - Lac
La Croix ponies has been
working on DNA mapping and has been working with owners of this
rare breed on both sides of the border, as well as Lac La Croix
First Nations. If you have questions about the LLCI Ponies,
Jane Mullen would be the person to ask, as she is Rare Breeds
Canada's most experienced
breeder of these ponies. Click
here to view Jane Mullen's website.
Another
part that Rare Breeds Canada has undertake is to sponsor a genome
study which is headed by
Dr. Gus Cothran for the University of Kentucky. This will ensure
that the breed stays strong while in the rebuilding program.
The
Lac La Croix pony was used by both children and adults. Some of
it's uses included:
pleasure riding, games, hauling wood, running trap lines and much
more.
